Spain awash with €500 notes

In Madrid, a taxi driver will sigh heavily if a passenger pays for a €10 journey with a €50 note. Shops and bars all over the country post notices warning of their inability to accept denominations of €100 or higher.

Yet the country is awash with €500 ($606, £347) notes, according to the Bank of Spain.
