Fed chief warns against stifling new ideas

Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, on Friday said regulation should make financial products more transparent but cautioned that policymakers should not stifle innovation.

As the US overhauls its regulatory system, Mr Bernanke offered a qualified defence of financial innovation, which has been blamed for contributing to the current crisis with a host of opaque derivatives masking risk.
