Western markets: France and the US vie for the UK’s crown

Until recently, London was comfortably leading the race to become the western hub for Islamic finance, in its quest to attract the Gulf’s oil wealth to the UK.

It boasted top financiers, progressive regulation, and a government that championed the sector. Gordon Brown, as chancellor and then prime minister, supported it and the Treasury amended tax laws that hindered complex sharia-compliant deals.
