‘We are talking about the future’

For Taro Aso, Japan’s prime minister, setting targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions is a matter of looking forward, not back.

So, in an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Aso insists that Japan’s goal of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming by 15 per cent over the next decade is an ambitious pledge that beats even the plans of the famously carbon-conscious European Union.
