Carbon permits reach record prices

Prices for carbon dioxide permits under the European Union's emissions trading scheme rose to record levels yesterday, threatening to increase the cost of polluting for the UK's electricity producers.

Permits to produce a tonne of carbon dioxide under the scheme were changing hands for just over €30 (£20.80) yesterday, according to Point Carbon, a carbon analyst company. The recent rises have been linked to stronger oil prices.
