Expectations of further rate reductions grow

At the end of August, Alistair Darling, the chancellor of the exchequer, warned that the UK was facing arguably the worst economic times in 60 years.

"At the time, this claim was widely derided," says Peter Dixon, economist at Commerzbank. "But no one is laughing now."
