New guidelines for US hedge funds

Top US regulators on Thursday unveiled the first new guidelines for hedge fund oversight in eight years but stopped short of calling for new laws or regulations to tighten control of the rapidly growing sector.

The move, which stressed the importance of due diligence and other market mechanisms in controlling behaviour, was welcomed by the hedge fund industry and appeared designed to head off calls for increased government supervision.
