The US budget deficit will hit nearly $1,200bn this fiscal year even without the cost of Barack Obama’s planned fiscal stimulus, Congress’s budget watchdog warned on Wednesday.

The warning came as the president-elect said that the stimulus would be “on the high end of our estimates” – implying close to $775bn over two years – but “will not be as high as some economists have recommended, because of the constraints and concerns we have about the existing deficit”.
