Inflation figures ease ECB worries

The eurozone’s brush with negative inflation rates could prove short-lived after a smaller-than-expected year-on-year fall in prices in August.

Consumer prices in the 16-country eurozone were 0.2 per cent lower than in the same month a year before, according to Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office. In July, it had reported an annual rate of inflation of minus 0.7 per cent.
