SEC chief admits to failures in Madoff case

The Securities and Exchange Commission is to examine its own “multiple failures” to investigate thoroughly past allegations of wrongdoing by Bernard Madoff, who is accused of perpetrating a $50bn fraud.

The commission has learned that “credible and specific allegations” regarding Mr Madoff’s financial wrongdoing were repeatedly brought to the attention of staff, but were never recommended for enforcement action, Christopher Cox, SEC chairman, said on Tuesday night.
