US envoy seeks to bridge gap with Israel

George Mitchell, the US Middle East envoy, held talks with Israeli leaders on Tuesday in the latest attempt to narrow diplomatic differences ahead of a speech by the Israeli prime minister that will map out his government’s response to Washington.

The Israeli government has come under intense pressure from the US administration recently to accept a complete freeze on the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and to throw its weight behind the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
