Study sees greater role for private providers

All developed countries will be forced to define core health services and allow more expensive and marginal treatments to be covered by out-of-pocket payments or private health insurance, according to a study by the consultants AT Kearney.

The study comes a week after Alan Johnson, health secretary, announced a review of whether NHS patients should be allowed to make “top up” payments for cancer drugs that the NHS says are not cost-effective.
