Retail sales growth slowed this month to its weakest level since November 2006 as consumers held off making big purchases, but retailers expected conditions on the high street to improve, a survey showed on Tuesday.
The monthly distributive trades survey by the CBI employers’ body showed a balance of 4 per cent of retailers reported rising sales volumes in January – better than the decline in sales they had expected, but continuing a nine-month trend of slowing growth.
