Optimism despite slowing sales growth

Retail sales growth slowed this month to its weakest level since November 2006 as consumers held off making big purchases, but retailers expected conditions on the high street to improve, a survey showed on Tuesday.

The monthly distributive trades survey by the CBI employers’ body showed a balance of 4 per cent of retailers reported rising sales volumes in January – better than the decline in sales they had expected, but continuing a nine-month trend of slowing growth.
