Academics vote to keep chemistry department

Plans to close the world-class chemistry department at the University of Sussex are to be reconsidered after academics voted overwhelmingly last night against the proposal.

At a meeting of the university's senate, the body that represents academics, a motion was passed demanding that no action should be taken to shut the department until alternative plans had been considered.
