US budget deficit hit a record $1,400bn

The US budget deficit hit a record $1,400bn in the last fiscal year as the government tried to spend its way out of recession, slightly less than expected but still more than three times that of 2008.

The Obama administration has argued that the deficit was the price the country had to pay to pull the recession-ravaged economy back from the brink. But on Friday it promised to take measures to bring it back down.
