Army confronts its hidden enemy

One of the most intriguing partners in the HIV vaccine trial is the US army. The military has a long-standing interest in medical research and treatment as infections disable and kill far more soldiers in conflict zones than bullets and bombs.

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, based just outside Washington, has an extensive history of work on projects including the development of prototype malaria vaccines. Other branches of the armed forces have set up networks round the world.
