Liverpool’s year overshadowed by funding fear

Liverpool’s big year as Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2008 kicks off on Friday with uncertainty still surrounding how the city will pay for the event.

Former Beatle Ringo Starr is to headline a free, open-air concert to start the year-long programme, while on Saturday an inaugural show will be held at a recently built £150m arena and convention centre, showing the physical benefits the status has helped to achieve.
