Cuts will hit north-east’s economy and pride

It is difficult to overestimate the importance to the north-east’s economy of the Nissan site, widely acknowledged as Europe’s most efficient carmaking plant.

A £2.4bn investment has grown, since production began in 1986, into a source of well-paid jobs for men in an area where traditional industry has shrunk. It has also been a source of leadership, cultural change and improved morale.
