Rise in legal action on unpaid bills

There has been a sharp increase in the number of small businesses resorting to the courts to force clients to pay up, a further sign of how tightening cash flow is compounding the effects of recession and threatening to bankrupt companies.

The number of county court judgments against listed companies in England and Wales has risen by a quarter since the beginning of the year.
