Oxbridge admissions debate turns vicious

The battle between ministers and Britain’s top universities over whether the institutions are doing their best to take in poor students turned vicious on Wednesday when the universities secretary accused Oxford’s chancellor of “deep conservatism”.

John Denham attacked Chris Patten, the former Conservative cabinet minister, for believing “nothing should ever change” and holding “an outmoded view” of how to broaden the talent pool at universities.
