Students should ‘earn as they learn’

Ministers must address the expected squeeze on higher education funding by encouraging students to be part-timers financing their daily living costs by working, according to a group representing the new wave of universities.

The comments by Les Ebdon, chairman of Million+ and vice-chancellor of Bedfordshire University, are likely to appal a generation of middle-class parents who typically spent three years as full-time students free from the cares of work.
