Retail data show US consumers starting retreat

Evidence that the embattled US consumer is starting to pull back on spending mounted on Tuesday after data revealed that retail sales fell last month.

The news sent stocks and bond yields tumbling as investors grew more concerned about an economic slowdown and more confident that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates sharply in response.
