Strike over coup raises tension in Honduras

Honduras was braced for violence as trade unions, farmers, student groups and social movements prepared for a two-day general strike set to begin on Thursday in protest against the recent military coup.

Fears of clashes were heightened as Manuel Zelaya, the deposed president, announced he would make a second attempt to return to his country, given the breakdown of talks aimed at a negotiated solution to the three-week-old political crisis last weekend.
