JPMorgan raises lending to municipalities

JPMorgan Chase is ramping up loans to cash-strapped US municipalities, adding a further $5bn to the $60bn it has already lent this year, in an effort to win more business from local authorities and steal a march on less healthy rivals.

The US bank said the new lending commitment, announced on Thursday, would nearly double its loans to hospitals, schools, universities and other local government units from last year’s levels.
