FDP makes inroads on power in coalition

With five ministers in chancellor Angela Merkel’s new 16-strong government, the economically liberal and socially libertarian Free Democratic party will be one of the most powerful junior coalition partners in recent German history.

The composition of the first centre-right German government in 11 years was not just the last decision the future ruling partners made as they wrapped up their coalition talks last week, it was also one of the most surprising.
