Zimbabwe faces political stalemate

While Morgan Tsvangirai’s decision to withdraw from Friday’s presidential run-off election theoretically hands President Robert Mugabe yet another term as the country’s leader, the reality is likely to be very different.

The decision could put the country on the road to weeks – possibly months – of fresh political uncertainty and accelerating economic collapse.
