Senator John Warner caught the White House off guard when he returned from a trip to Iraq last October to announce that the situation was slipping “sideways”.

The Virginia Republican, just back from Iraq, on Thursday fired another shot across the bow of the administration by calling on George W.Bush to start a phased withdrawal from Iraq.
