Mercosur set to delay expansion plans

Mercosur was on Friday expected to delay a controversial decision on expansion that would have strengthened the influence of Hugo Chávez, Venezuela's radical president, within the five-member trading bloc.

At a two-day presidential summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil had supported moves to give full membership of Mercosur to Bolivia, whose leftwing government is allied with Venezuela.
