Black empowerment stuck in slow lane

SABMiller has been talking about a black empowerment deal in its South African heartland for years.

Nevertheless, the conclusion of a deal – which will hand black employees and other stakeholders a R6bn ($775m) slice of the company’s Johannesburg-based subsidiary at an estimated cost of $220m – is significant. It is by far the biggest empowerment deal in South Africa this year.
