Britain prepares much-reduced EU budget

Britain will on Monday present plans for a much-reduced European Union budget worth about €850bn, heralding 10 days of tense negotiations ahead of a decisive EU summit in Brussels.

Tony Blair, prime minister of the UK, which holds the EU presidency, was on Sunday night putting the finishing touches to the draft seven-year budget, with officials warning that “very difficult” negotiations lay ahead.
