Hunt on for acceptable, less powerful successor

Mohammad Mian Soomro, chairman of Pakistan's Senate - the upper house of parliament - was last night named as the country's acting president, beginningthe process of installing a successor to Pervez Musharraf.

While Mr Soomro, a banker turned politician, received briefings from government officials, attention focused mainly on a meeting of key leaders of the ruling coalition in Islamabad discussing possible candidates to sponsor the president's election.
