John Thain, the recently installed chief executive of Merrill Lynch, has become Wall Street's Mr Fix-It.

When the New York Stock Exchange was in crisis in 2004, the venerable institution turned to Mr Thain, then co-president of Goldman Sachs, to repair its tattered reputation. He succeeded, along the way turning the NYSE from a clubby, member-owned partnership into a global, publicly traded company.
