Chemicals are big business and are used in everything from food production and water treatment to cosmetics and clothes.
Last year global chemical sales revenues were estimated at about €1736bn. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says that by 2025 output will be 85 per cent higher than in 1995.
