Bill Gates last night unveiled two new technologies designed to make it easier to access and manage digital entertainment, signalling an extension of Microsoft's efforts to outflank arch-rival Apple with a wider range of inter-connected digital devices.

His comments, made at the opening of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, come ahead of the expected announcement tomorrow of a range of new products from Apple, including an iPod that doubles as a cellphone.
