Sarkozy looks to BBC model for TV revamp

Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday launched a far-reaching shake-up of French television, proposing to tax -commercial operators in order to fund a high-quality public broadcaster that would promote the country's cultural and economic -"renaissance".

The French president said at his first full press conference at the Elysée palace since his election seven months ago that advertising on the nation's two public television stations could be scrapped.
