Senate rejects Iraq bill tied to deadline

The Senate on Wednesday rejected an effort to impose a March 2008 deadline for withdrawing US troops from Iraq as politicians continued drafting legislation to overcome an impasse with the White House over funding for the wars there and in Afghanistan.

The Senate voted 67-29 to reject an amendment to the war funding bill that would have cut off funds for troops in Iraq beyond March.
