Brown seeks US support for action on prices

Gordon Brown is seeking transatlantic support for his faltering initiative to get international action to tackle the soaring global oil price, with the UK lobbying the administration and both US presidential candidates.

John Hutton, the business secretary, held meetings in Washington last week with big oil companies, senior White House officials and the Barack Obama and John McCain campaign teams to try to ensure that the UK attempt to build consensus had US backing.
