Russian visa threat to British Council

The UK's relations with Russia looked set to hit a fresh low after Moscow said it would suspend visa issuance for employees of the British Council when the organisation defied an order to close its regional branches.

Russia's foreign ministry said the council's move to reopen its St Petersburg office yesterday after the prolonged new year holidays was a "planned provocation aimed at escalating the tension in Russo-British relations".
