Credit jitters weigh on financials

European equity indices slid over the week as jitters about the health of the credit markets weighed on financial stocks and spilled into the construction sector, where fears about financing began to bite.

A seasonal rally as options positions expired on the final full trading day before Christmas failed to lift the FTSE Eurofirst 300 over the week. The index slipped 2 per cent to 1,507.08.
