Cafta overcomes important hurdle

The Central American Free Trade Agreement cleared an important hurdle in the US Congress on Wednesday, winning a solid majority in the influential ways and means committee.

An informal poll on the committee showed 25 in favour to 16 against. The vote was largely split along party lines. But two Democrats broke ranks with their party in support of Cafta.
