Alcatel losses widen in first quarter

Alcatel-Lucent’s first-quarter net loss more than doubled from the same period last year, as the Franco-American company yesterday reported a sharp fall in revenue at its core business that makes telecoms equipment.

Some analysts questioned whether the group could hit its target of breaking even at the level of operating profit in 2009, particularly given that many telecoms operators are cutting back spending on network equipment in the global recession.
