The Italian government could provide up to €450m ($613m) in infrastructure investment and other aid to investors as it seeks to find alternative uses for an ageing Fiat car plant in Sicily to preserve jobs and the local economy.
Fiat is set to halt car production at its Termini Imerese plant on the island in 2011 and shift the business to other sites in Italy. The decision has created a political problem for the government ahead of local elections across Italy at the end of March.
