The Dalai Lama has no doubt what is at stake for South Africa as it prepares to be led by the easy-going, flamboyant and yet rather controversial Jacob Zuma.

The ruling African National Congress had lost sight of its ideals, he told the Financial Times this month. “Unfortunately, some government officials regard money and political power as more important than principle,” he said. “And that is sad.”
