Holiday transport crisis hits China

Chinese authorities were on Tuesday scrambling to resolve a crisis in transport and power systems that has left millions of travellers stranded, closed scores of factories and is threatening to inflict severe damage on the economy.

The crisis, brought on by the combination of the worst snow falls in half a century and power cuts caused by coal shortages, has coincided with China’s peak travel season, the lunar new year.
