FGIC and SCA face downgrade

Two bond insurance groups - FGIC and SCA - faced a fresh bout of credit rating downgrades yesterday, highlighting the continued pressure on companies in the sector with exposure to losses on mortgage-backed bonds.

The ratings cuts came as Financial Guaranty Insurance Company said the extent of its potential mortgage-related losses had caused a breach of its regulatory capital requirements and it could no longer write new guarantees on municipal bonds or structured bonds.
