Berlin warns French leaders to give EU treaty a chance

Germany has warned the French presidential candidates not to derail its planto relaunch the European Union constitution byusing the subject as an election issue.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, foreign minister of Germany, which holds the rotatingEU presidency, said senior French politicians should remain "flexible" on the constitution ahead of April's presidential elections. Last week Ségolène Royal, the Socialist candidate, said she would put a new treaty to another referendum.
