Brussels rethink on air pollution irks ‘green’ groups

Environmental groups on Monday launched an blistering attack on the European Commission for its decision to postpone the adoption of a sweeping package of measures to fight air pollution.

According to Commission estimates, the plans could prevent about 350,000 premature deaths every year by curbing emissions across a wide range of sectors. However, industry and several senior commissioners have been alarmed by an internal study suggesting the measures could cost the European economy about €12bn ($14bn, £8bn) a year.
