ASIA-PACIFIC President Barack Obama will send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan by next summer in a renewed bid to defeat the Taliban, but aims to start withdrawing US forces in mid-2011.
In a long-awaited and sombre speech at West Point military academy on Tuesday night Mr Obama said he was confident Washington’s Nato allies would also provide extra forces.
