Brown holds firm on terror detention

Gordon Brown on Monday vowed to stick to his “principles” and increase the maximum pre-charge detention period for terror suspects to 42 days, amid the first signs that a Commons rebellion on the issue was weakening.

In a warmly received address to a meeting of Labour MPs, Jacqui Smith, home secretary, outlined a series of extra safeguards to placate backbenchers concerned about extending the period from its current 28-day limit.
