'Rigging' slur ends vicious campaign

A vicious Italian election campaign reached its climax yesterday with Romano Prodi, the centre-left leader, denouncing Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, for suggesting the opposition would rig the ballot.

"A long and bitter election campaign is finishing, one that has often exceeded every limit," Mr Prodi said. "It really is something new for a prime minister to spread fear and a lack of confidence in democracy."
